Backing
Fly line backing fills your reel to the right capacity, provides the reserve line when a big fish runs beyond your fly line, and acts as an insurance policy that most fly fishers never need - until the day they do.
Dacron braided backing is the standard for most South African fly fishing situations. It has minimal stretch, high knot strength and does not cut into itself on the spool when wound under tension - important when a yellowfish or tigerfish takes backing on a run. 20lb Dacron suits most freshwater trout and bass reels; 30lb is the right choice for saltwater species, large yellowfish and any application where a sustained, powerful run is possible.
Gel-spun backing offers the same strength at a thinner diameter, allowing more backing on the same reel - useful when targeting large saltwater species where a longer backing reserve is essential, or when fitting a heavier fly line onto a smaller reel.
At Frontier we stock backing in the strengths and lengths needed for South African fly fishing, from trout rivers to estuaries.
