Wag-‘n-Bietjie Drift: A Unique Fishing Adventure

Private stretch of the Vaal River

Our Vaal River fly fishing drift takes place on a private eco farm, three hours’ drive from Johannesburg. We drift the river over three days, covering about 20 km of privately accessed river on both banks. This section of the Vaal River is pristine and untouched and produces good numbers of big smallmouth and largemouth yellowfish; 10-pound smallmouth yellowfish are not uncommon.

Strong, hard-fighting smallmouth and largemouthyellowfish

Drifting the river allows anglers access to water that sees no fishing pressure, with some of the most beautiful glides, riffles and runs we have ever seen that offer excellent fly fishing for smallmouth yellowfish. There are also large, deep pools offering fly fishing for largemouth yellowfish, which hold tight to structure or lurk near drop-offs, as well as large grass carp and catfish to target in the varied waters.

Stunning scenery and excellent birding

Along with the great fishing, the scenery is spectacular. There are excellent birding opportunities on the river and while in camp and you are likely to encounter waterbuck, wildebeest, springbok, blesbok and various riverine animals during the trip.

Excellent camping with hot showers and large tents

Each evening is spent at a well-appointed camp site on the banks of the river. The camps have excellent ablution facilities, and hot showers which are a welcome treat after a long day on the river. Tents are equipped with beds and are large enough for our guests get dressed in and prepare for their day. Evenings are spent around the fire with cold beverages and grass-fed beef steaks sourced from this working cattle farm.
