Hackle Pliers

Hackle pliers are one of those fly tying tools that seem simple until you try to wind a size 18 dry fly hackle without them. A good pair gives you the grip and control to wrap hackle cleanly without it slipping, fraying or breaking mid-wind - and the right style for the job makes a real difference to the finish of your flies.

English style hackle pliers are the standard: a simple spring-tension clip that holds the hackle tip and lets you wind with consistent tension. Rotary hackle pliers add a swivelling head that rotates with each turn of the bobbin, keeping the feather from twisting as you wind - particularly useful for soft hackles and larger saltwater patterns. Mini hackle pliers work the same way but are sized for small dry fly and midge work where a full-size pair is too bulky to control.
