What It Is
There are days on the water when a fast rod simply isn't fast enough. When the wind rolls in off the mountains and you need to drive a fly into a tight window at distance. When you're lifting a heavy sinking line from the depths for a quick recast before the fish moves on. When conditions demand more than confidence; they demand capability. The Sage Power R8 was built for exactly those days.
The newest and most technically demanding member of Sage's R8 family, the Power R8 is an ultra-fast action fly rod designed for anglers who regularly push into technical territory. It takes everything that made the R8 Core one of the most complete rods Sage has ever produced and adds another gear – more reserve power through the mid- and butt sections, higher line speed at distance, and the authority to handle heavy sinking lines and large flies without drama. This is not a rod that shouts about its capabilities. It simply delivers them, cast after cast, in the conditions where other rods start to struggle.

On the Water
In January and February 2026, Frontier Fly Fishing’s Dean Riphagen and longtime fishing companion Sven Retzlaff put early production samples of the Power R8 through their paces on the rivers and streams of New Zealand's South Island. These waters offer up some of the most demanding trout fishing in the world. Fishing both small- and large patterns on light tippets to large, wary brown trout, the rods performed far beyond expectations.
What struck Dean immediately was the combination of reserve power in the butt and genuine sensitivity in the tip, two qualities that rarely coexist in a rod of this action. On hook sets the tip cushioned the strike without popping the tippet. During the fight, the butt dug in and controlled fish that had no interest in coming to the net. During their time in New Zealand, Dean and Sven didn’t break a single fish off. For Dean, that says everything: “These rods are absolute game-changers and redefine what a fast action rod can do.”

The Technology
The Power R8's performance is rooted in Sage's Revolution 8 graphite technology – the same material platform that underpins the entire R8 family, here pushed to its upper limits in an ultra-fast taper designed specifically for technical conditions. The result is a blank that generates exceptional line speed with a clean, stable tracking stroke, cutting loops through wind and laying line down at distance without the locked-up stiffness that makes many ultra-fast rods unpleasant to fish all day.
The hardware is built to match. Fuji K-Series Tangle-Free stripping guides with SiC rings eliminate line grabbing under load – a small but meaningful detail when you're shooting line or recovering quickly between casts. Premium flor grade cork handles and, on the lighter models, an extra-figured walnut reel seat insert reflect the level of finish you would expect at this end of the market. The Hot Rod Red blank with burgundy base wraps and grey and black trim is unmistakably purposeful – a rod that looks exactly as serious as it fishes. Handcrafted in the USA, the Power R8 arrives packaged in a black rod bag and aluminium tube with Sage medallion, ready for wherever the fishing takes you.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between the Sage Power R8 and the Sage R8 Core?
What is the difference between the Sage Power R8 and the Sage R8 Core?
The R8 Core is Sage's all-round, fast action flagship rod; versatile and comfortable across most freshwater situations. The Power R8 adds another gear: an ultra-fast action rod with more reserve power through the butt allowing higher line speeds at distance and greater authority in the wind even when large flies are the order of the day. The R8 Core is the rod for everything. The Power R8 is the rod for when everything is not quite enough.
Is the Power R8 suitable for dry fly fishing, or is it purely a distance and wind rod?
Is the Power R8 suitable for dry fly fishing, or is it purely a distance and wind rod?
These rods are far more capable when fishing dry flies than you might expect. Dean Riphagen fished these rods using small dry flies and nymphs to large browns in New Zealand using very light tippets and never once broke a fish off. The tip sensitivity is genuine. That said, for delicate, short-range dry fly work in calm conditions, the R8 Core will serve you better. When conditions get demanding, the Power R8 would be the rod of choice.
Which Power R8 model should I choose for trout fishing in South Africa?
Which Power R8 model should I choose for trout fishing in South Africa?
For most South Africans fishing larger rivers like the Vaal or Orange, the 590-4 or 690-4 models would be the rods of choice where smallmouth yellowfish are the target. For largemouth yellowfish the 790-4 or 890-4 models would be the ideal choice. For stillwater trout fishing the 590-4 or 690-4 models would be the obvious choices.
Can the Sage Power R8 handle saltwater conditions?
Can the Sage Power R8 handle saltwater conditions?
The heavier line models – the 790-4 through the 990-4 – are fitted with anodised aluminium reel seats with hidden hook keepers, making them ideal for salt- as well as freshwater use. For dedicated saltwater fly fishing, the Sage Salt R8 remains the purpose-built choice, but the heavier Power R8 models are more than capable for estuaries and light inshore work.
